Winter has well and truly set in in Cape Town and with the first sightings of snow on the mountains we have our fire place roaring all day every day! Our vines are resting but our vineyard and cellar teams are hard at work getting the next vintages of your favourite wines ready for release. Our marketing team has been having fun putting together a few videos of Eagles’ Nest – take a look to see what we have been up to by clicking on this link

This is what Stuart, our winemaker, has to say…

“In the winery at the moment,  we are busy with final preparation of the 2016 Sauvignon Blanc. The blends have been assessed and finalized and the bottling date is booked. We look forward to release on the first of spring.

Good news is that the 2016 Little Eagle Rose’ has recently been bottled,  along with a small production of the 2014 Little Eagle Red. Following a stock out period of a few months on these wines, the new vintages will be ready for release in a couple of weeks’ time.

On the red wine front, we are busy with racking and returning on all 2015 reds, as well as the first rack and return on the 2016 reds.

2015 is shaping up to be an outstanding red wine vintage for us, with wines that will age incredibly well.”

Some news from Kobus about what is happening in the vineyards…

“Although below the average for our area, rainfall has been more substantial than last year and we are delighted that the dams at Eagles’ Nest are full.

The teams have now started with the first stages of pruning in selected blocks – PRE PRUNING  – which will allow us to best concentrate our efforts during FINAL PRUNING which is expected to proceed later in August.

We have also been using our time to do some important maintenance work in the vineyards, including replacing broken poles and some anchor and trellis wires, par for the course based on the windswept mountain side where the vineyards are located.

The cover crops that we put in to create mulch for summer are all taking off. In addition to the practical functions of containing moisture and creating organic matter for the soil, these paint a beautiful picture of lush greenery among the winter dormant vineyards high against the mountain slopes.”

There have been a few accolades presented to Eagles’ Nest in the last few months and we are very happy to brag tell you about them here. We recently attended the SAWI Awards 2016 where we won 2 Platinum Awards for our Shiraz and Viognier as well as a Grand Gold Award for our Merlot. We were awarded the highest rated Shiraz with 100 points and the highest rated Viognier with 96.6 points. Our Merlot was awarded 93.1 points which put it in the “Exceptionally Outstanding” category.

Our Shiraz 2013 was also awarded a spot in the Shiraz SA Top 12 Challenge and the very reputable Christian Eedes of the Wine Mag has rated this wine 95/100.

At The Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show 2016 we were the highest rated Viognier and placed in the Top 3 in the Merlot Category.

The fire is roaring, the red wine is flowing and we are open as usual this winter.

We have introduced some winter warmers in the form of SOUPerb soups. Whether is it a hearty bowl of Goulash or a healthy bowl of butternut soup – we have it available with a warm crispy baguette [best used in place of a spoon].

We have also brought back limited stock of an “old favourite” from our Library. This will be available for the next month or so…. to find out more you will have to come visit the Tasting Room or contact us on 021 794 4095

Did you know we release a limited amount of Magnums from every vintage? Currently available is our award winning Shiraz 2013 Magnum and Merlot 2013 Magnum – they come in a beautiful box and make for the perfect present; or keep them for a few years and open them on a special occasion [sometimes a special occasion is the fact that you have an Eagles’ Nest Magnum in your cellar!]

We are also pouring the Sauvignon Blanc 2015 – however this is nearly out of stock with the 2016 vintage only being released at the beginning of Spring. So if you are an Eagles’ Nest Sauvignon Blanc fan we may be out of stock for a couple of weeks between vintages so get in touch to get hold of a few bottles.

Our Merlot 2012 was released a few months ago and WOW! What an amazing vintage – perhaps the best yet – if you haven’t tried it you are missing out!

Our Award winning Shiraz 2013 is available for tasting and sale – pop by to see what all the hype is about, you won’t be disappointed!

Sadly we have now sold out of our Viognier 2015 – however the new vintage will be available before the end of the year.

Our Little Eagle Rosé 2016 will be available within the next week or two. Just in time for the first rays of summer sunlight. A firm summer favourite!

The Little Eagle Red 2014 will also be making an appearance again soon – watch this space!

We have created videos for some of our wines – have a look at them HERE
