Born in Bloemfontein, Jonathan moved to Cape Town very young and the Cape has been in his blood ever since. Educated at Rondebosch Boys Prep and High schools, he studied Mechanical Engineering at Stellenbosch University, where his passion for the wine was first awakened. In 1992 he resigned his position as Production Director at Consani Engineering, a well known Cape Town manufacturer, to start his own project management company, which he sold in 2005 to focus on managing his family’s business interests. Married to Leigh in 1983, Jonathan moved to Eagles’ Nest shortly after his father purchased the property in 1984 and spent the first twelve years of his married life at Eagles’ Nest, where his family, a daughter and two sons, were born. After the fire that ravaged Eagles’ Nest in 2000, Jonathan and his brother-in-law Peter Stewart decided to pursue their dream of founding a new premium wine estate on the, now devastated, land. Whilst Peter took charge of developing the vineyards and winery, Jonathan has taken on the role of Marketing and Administration. He is passionate about the outdoors and spends most of his leisure time hiking and running the trails of the Western Cape Mountains.
Peter Stewart – Director
Pete has two passions in life: wine and surfing. He has lived and worked in Cape Town all his life. An information technology specialist he has held executive directorships of listed insurance companies and after retiring in 1999, he continues to consult as a business strategist. However, over the past 10 years he has dedicated his time and resources to establishing Eagles’ Nest as a commercially viable wine farm. When Pete is not overseeing the management of the farming operations, he can be found riding some of the more notorious breaks off the Cape coast in pursuit of the perfect wave. His favourite wine? Eagles’ Nest Viognier every time.
Stuart Botha – Winemaker
Originally from Durban, but schooled at Wynberg Boys’ High School and Elsenberg, Stuart is the quintessential modern winemaker: obsessive about quality at every stage of the winemaking process, hugely knowledgeable about winemaking techniques in various international wine regions and driven to ensure that our wines are a true reflection of their terroir. After graduating, Stuart worked at our neighbouring farm Constantia Glen before heading off to work in St Emillion in Bordeaux. Since joining Eagles’ Nest before the 2008 harvest, Stuart oversees all aspects of the winemaking process. What, in Stuart’s view, makes a great wine? It is a wine that is true to its origin, is unique in its flavour profile and is the embodiment of finesse, complexity and elegance.
Kobus Jordaan – Farm Manager
Born and raised in Worcester, Kobus is a farmer through and through. At the end of the day, when all the workers have gone home, you can still see him walking through the vineyards and checking on his beloved vines. Having graduated from Elsenberg in 1977, Kobus spent nearly four years working at Plaisir de Merle before Dougie Jooste – having spotted this talented young assistant farm manager – hired him to help establish the vineyards at his new farm, Klein Constantia. He spent 25 years there and his knowledge of Constantia is unparalleled. Since joining Eagles’ Nest in 2008, Kobus has played a pivotal role in ensuring that the grapes that come into the cellar are a true reflection of our very unique terroir.
